INTOXICATED MOTORIST

SERIOUSLY INJURES A CYCLIST (By Telegraph—Prom Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. In consequence of a collision on the Iliitt road, in which a cyclist, C. E. Warr, was seriously injured, Nathaniel John Reid, salesman, aged 41, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court with causing bodily injury while driving in a state of intoxication. Medical evidence was that Warr was severely hurt and would b ei incapacitated for six months, and possibly suffer shortness in a leg which was broken. A witness said lie saw accused, who was driving erratically, swerve to one side and hit the cyclist. He saw accused after the accident and considered that he was in. liquor and unfit to drive. Counsel’s, version for accused was that the day was wet and windy and that a cigarette flew in Reid's eye and temporarily blinded him. The car did not belong to him. Eventually accused decided to plead guilty rather than wait three months for trial, and was committed for sentence. INVERCARGILL, This Day. For being drunk in charge of a car, as the result of which a collision occurred, Norman Hugh Gallagher was fined .fMO and liacl his license suspended for two years. The Bench refused to suppress the name.
