APPOINTMENT OF A SUPERVISOR
(To the Editor) Sir, —Regarding the above several letters have appeared in your columns. Most of these letters‘were written with a view’ of gaining further and fuller knowledge. The data so far given by the committee had been meagre, and the presence of these letters should have been welcomed rather than resented as it would seem they are in certain quarters. Tlie prompt and pertinent publicity was, indeed, good evidence of a wholesome public spirit, and tho sincerity and earnestness of nearly all the writers was obvious. The writers were by no means ignorant of the idle and uninformed street corner gossip actively going on, which if not refuted must inevitably have affected the committee injuriously, and moreover, had a most disastrous effect upon the receipt of donations and upon all efforts to raise funds. We now r have the assurance of the relief committee backed by independent testimony from Murchison itself, that tho work of immediate and imperative restoration is progressing apace; that it is entirely satisfactory, and that the people concerned (and they should be good judges) are pleased and happy. I for one have nothing more to say. I am, etc., READER. Nelson, 31st July.
