CANOPUS HELD UP

TROUBLE WITH THE CREW (By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The steamer Canopus is held up at Lyttelton owing to a dispute with the crew, which originated in a fracas between a fireman and the cook, the latter proving victorious. The matter has been taken up by the Seamen's Union, which announced that the crew would not sail unless the cook was dismissed. The Cooks' and Stewards' Union then advised that if the cook were dismissed another would not be supplied. The two unions are thus at loggerheads and have reached a deadlock. Failing a settlement the crew will be paid off to-day and the ship laid up. CREW TO BE PAID OFF CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The Canopus will probably be laid up indefinitely as the result of the dispute between cooks and stewards and the firemen. The crew are to be paid off this afternoon.
