BIG CHRISTCHURCH DEAL OPE (By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, ,29th July. It was reported in the city on Saturday that the negotiations which have been in progress for several weeks past for the sale of the least- of the whole of Strange's block in High and Lichfield streets and the goodwill of tho business formerly carried on by Messrs Strange and Co., Ltd., had failed, and that the deal had been officially declared off. When the rumour was mentioned to Mr A. F. Stacey, the agent concerned in the deal, he would neither confirm nor deny it, but stated that at present ho was not in a position to discuss the matter. It is understood that the negotiations were for the lease of Strange's block to a syndicate, which proposed to float a new' company to carry on a drapery and general --""'importing-- business under the name of W. Strange and Co., Ltd. The negotiations were commenced early this month. CANADIAN WHEAT POOL OTTAWA, 28th July. Mr Ramsay has officially announced that the Canadian wheat pool's initial payment for the 1929 crop has been fixed at one dollar per bushel. "A dollar per bushel has been the initial price paid by the pool since the Canadian pool was formed in 1924, with tho exception of last year when the initial payment was lowered to 80 cents. We are satisfied that the step then taken by our central board was amply justified by market developments during recent months.," , FROZEN MEAT MARKET Messrs Levin and Co. The market for lamb is very weak and there are no indications for immediate improvement. The market for mutton shows a downward tendency, particularly for prime ewes.
