SENTENCED FOR THEFT

CLERK IN LANDS DEPARTMENT (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Theft as a servant of £414 brought Thomas George Gillespie (49), a clerk in the Lands Department for over 29 years, before the Chief Justice in the Supreme Court for sentence. After hearing counsel his Honour said the case was not one in which any Court could grant probation. Punishment after all was something more than mere punishment for an individual offender. The deterrent effect had to bo considered. Tho sentence xvas twelve months’ reformative detention.
