THE GREAT BED OF WARE

In the catalogue of aii auction in Ware in 186*4 “the celebrated Great Bed of Ware” is described as hiiving been formerly preserved in the Old Manor House, where the Fanshawe family resided. It is said to bear the date 14(53; but perhaps the date may have been a later addition. Indeed, the catalogue, points out that .the union of the Houses of York unci' Lancaster, which the curving on the tester is supposed to commemorate, did not take place till some years later. In one catalogue someone added the following notes: l, £j>old to Mr Charles Dickens at 100 guineas. The man. was 30 years making it. The last that slept in. it were *24 soldiers.” The bed is now at Rye House. The fact tliut the bed is moutiohcd by Shakespeare would probably make it a fat* more valuable piece in an auction room to-day.
