DISCUSSION ON PROTECTIVE DUTIES (Br Telegraph—Frew Awocliittouf WELLINGTON.' This Day. After a lengthy discussion, in which widely divergent views were expressed, the Fanners' Union Executive carried an amendment favouring the gradual abolition of all protective duties. The original motion urged the retention of the sliding scale of duties on wheat. Numerous amendments were proposed before finality was arrived at. A resolution was also passed stronglv opposing the setting up of a Permanent Tariff Board, but contending that before revision or alterations are undertaken there should be a public inquiry and re- j port by a competent tribunal.
