THE VIOLA
The viola, an instrument of indispensable value in concerted music for stringed instruments, is gradually coming into vogue as a solo instrument. It has qualities of its own which deserve recognition. As the viola's highest string is A., five notes lower than the violin's highest string, its tone is not- so brilliant as violin tone, but it owns a richness of quality which the violin dees not equal. It is particularly well -suited to music of emotional appeal of the melodic sort, and less well suited to music of the brilliant display type. In the orchestra, as in the string quartet, the colour of the viola's tone is invaluable, and in many regards the student of the instrument "has reason to be satisfied with his choice.
