PRIVATE AFFORESTATION
NO MEDDLESOME STATE INTER TERENCE STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. An. assurance, that, there would be no meddlesome State interference by the present Government w.ith the operations of private afforestation interests and that there was no intention to apply special taxation to lands devoted to alforestation, was given by Sir Joseph Ward to a deputation from the Timber Growers' Association. The Commissioner of Lands and the Minister of Lands were also present. / It was stated that the subscribed total of forestry companies to date was £4,125,000, and there were 110,000 individual owners, 30.000 of whom were in New Zealand. The acreage planted was 144,000. In giving his assurance Sir Joseph Ward remarked Eiiat the forestry industry had developed in a remarkable manner. He hoped future operations would be successful and thought there were good prospects. If they wanted the co-operation of the present Government at. any time while it was in office they would bo glad to givo the fullest consideration to any requests that might be made.
