GAMING AMENDMENT
SECOND READING OF BILL MAY RE DELAYED (By Telegraph) (From "The Mail's" Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, This. Day. Until the Address-in-ißeply Debate is out of the way it is impossible to say when the Gaming Amendment Bill' in charge of Sir George Hunter (Waipawa) •will come on for second reading in the House of Representatives. At present the Bill is down for the second reading stage for Thursday of this week, but it is possible that'it may not come on then, as it "has-been stated that if the Addres,s-in-Replv Debate ends to-day, s the House will afterwards proceed to consideration of the draft of the new Standing Orders, which will take some little time to get through, as .they are very numerous, not to say contentious. When a deputation from the racing interests waited on the Prime Minister some time* ago a request was made that the Government should bring in a Gaming Amendment, but the Prime Minister declined to do so, contenting himself with promising that facilities for discussion would be provided if a private member moved in the matter. Since then Sir George Hunter lias introduced a Bill, which provides for telegraphing investments to the totalisator and for the publication of dividends. Supporters of the Bill believe that it will command a majority in the Lower 1 House, and some go so far as to urge that if the second reading is carried by a substantial margin the Government should then take over the measure, or • else afford the fullest opportunity for its passage. It is not likely that anything of a very definite nature will be disclosed until the second reading. If the Bill goes through the House of Representatives with a good majority in its favour, attention will be. turned to the attitude which the Legislative Council will adopt towards it, it is taken for granted that some Councillors will put up opposition to the Bill. A deputation from the Ministers' Association to protest against the Bill will wait on the Prime Minister on Thursday ,_lst_August.
