RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION
PROGRESS ON NELSON EXTENSION RAILS NEARLY TO OWEN RIVER The Hon. W. W. Snodgrass, M.L.C., who returned from Murchison yesterday, inspected the railway construction work from Gmvan bridge"to the Owen. At the time of the earthquake there were 260 men employed on the railway, but that number has been reduced to 210, some of th e men going on to road work in the vicinity. The number of men on railway construction is being increased, but at present there is a shortage of accommodation. The line has been completed to the Gowan Bridge. The 'quake caused minor damage to the line, but repairs have been effected and it is available as far as Gowan Bridge. At present the last section of the lino to Owen is being surveyed and the end of the actual line is nearly to the Owen river. Mr Snodgrass also stated that there are 200 men working on the road between Gowan and Murchison, repairing earthquake damage and making deviations in connection with the railway work.
