NEW ZEALAND APPLES
SHIPMENT TO GLASGOW LARGE FRUIT IN DEMAND LONDON, 14th .1 11110. The Westmoreland discharged 7004 cases of New Zealand apples at Glasgow this week, and yesterday these were sold at auction. Contrary to London taste, the larger apples are more desired in Glasgow, and the prices varied according to size.
The largest donathans made as much as Ills per case, and various other (jnantities in diminishing size sold at las, 1 Is, Ills and 12s I>d. Delicious made from 12s (id to Ids; Statesman, Lis to Ids; Stunners, Ids to Ids; Dunns, 14s to Ids; and a few Rome Beauty Ids. The good prices in Glasgow for the large size shows how necessary it is to select one’s markets. At the'present time there is a quantity of large Jonathans in London for which only 10s a case can be obtained. The apple* are too far advanced to send away, or else they could he shipped to Rotterdam, where it is reported 18s could he obtained for them. Some 15,000 cases of apples and 0000 cases of pears arrived by the Rangitiki this week. The fruit was discharged at Southampton yesterday, and most of it will come up to London by rail. A certain quantity remained at Southampton for sale, and a small quantity went to Birmingham. As there is onlv a definite demand for pears half the shipment will remain in cool store at Southampton for the present. Prospects for the late boats are decidedly good. The Australian shipments are coming to an end, and the American shipments, although unusually large for this time of the year, are not very fjerious competitors. It was thought that the American shipments would cease some weeks ago, but this has not been the case. Winesaps and Newtons continue to arrive. Last week 7(5,000 cases came from America. This week--187,000 cases have arrived, and next week 47,000 cases arc expected.
