Hugo Von Hofniannstahl, the wellknown Austrian poet who wrote the libretto for Strauss’s opera Rosenkavalier, as well as other Strauss operas, died in the most tragic circumstances, on returning from the funeral of his son Franz, who was in hi.s early twenties and committed suicide by shooting on Saturday because ho was unable to find a congenial job. Hugo’s death is attributed to apoplexy, but suicide is suspected.
