' Though South Africa's position in the lest match appeared hopeless when play resumed, the last three wickets added 159. Owen-Smith made the highest score for South Africa in Test matches against England. The last wicket added 103— another record. ''"', To-day's was the most exciting of the three days' play. Owen-Smith was dropped three times. He hit two sixes and fifteen fours, and also broke a bat. Wooliey eventually caught him at point. The tourists' indomitable spirit won them an ovation at the close of their muings. England, wanting 184 to win, lost Sutcliffe and Hammond with the total at 13, half the side being out cheaply. Owen-Smith further distinguished himself by catching Sutcliffe. The South Africans fielded nobly, and kept the runs down. Wooliey played a chanceless innings. He hit eight fours and had the satisfaction of making the winning hit. His partnership with Tate yielded 76 in 40 minutes.
