PREFERENCE OR FREE TRADE
FOR RRITISH EMPIRE (Unitisd Prese Association-- By Kleetrir T«l»irrapli-Uopyriffhti (Australian Press Association) LONDON, 15. h July. The ".Morning Post" in a lea'der discussing I .on 1 Melehell's plea for free trade within the Empire, says: "We desire to say nothing to discourage Lord Melehett or' Lord licaverbrook, but they will find difficulty in persuading the dominions entirely to sweep away m our favour tariffs on which they depend for both revenue and protection for young industries. What we hoped for was more modest and to the dominions, less alarming a continuous widening of the present svsteni of preferential trade. We suggest' to Lord Melehett ami Lord lleuverbrook that while they are arguing for something grandiose we arc in peril of losing something of such value that other nations would give their eyes to possess it. We enjoy a favoured position in the most hopeful and most expansive markets of the world. What the advantage will he worth when these vas! territories are more closely populated and tally developed goes beyond our arithmetic.''
