Dr. Pierre Maria, of the Pasteur Institute, died of botulism, a ghastly food poisoning disease. A fortnight age while experimenting to find a serum antidote, a minute fragment of toxic powder lodged in his left eye. Within two days the eyes were inflamed, then the mouth and' throat were paralysed, and finally the arms, shoulders, and legs. Nourishment meanwhile was given through the nose. The victim throughout retained his intelligence intact and watched and commented on the course of the disease. Finally he asked to have his eyelids opened in order to see his nails. "They are turning blue," ho managed to articulate, "tmm I am lost." This was oil Thursday last, and he has now died in terrible agony. |
