OBITUARY
MR JESSE ERNEST HOUNSELL '['lie death occurred yesterday of 0110 of Nelson's okle.il and most respected residents—Mr .Hesse Ernest Hounsell, for many years proprietor of the wellknown bookseller's business in Trafalgar street, in which lie succeeded his father. It was only at the end of last month that Mr Hounsell disposed of his business. His health had not been robust for some time. Ho was seriously ill two years ago, but recovered sufficiently to resume his, duties at his shop. Ever since his retirement his condition has caused anxiety and for some days past it was known that his case was hopeless. During the long period of years Mr Hounsell was associated with the bookselling business he earned the respect of all, being always attentive to detail and most obliging to customers. Away from business his pastimes were angling and bowls. Me was one of the oldest anglers of the district, and in His day had secured many good bags. He had been a member of the Maitai Bowling Club since its foundation, and was one of the most popular members on the green. He leaves a widow, to whom will be extended the deep sympathy of a wide circle of friends.
MR CHARLES KNAPP, J.P. , The many friends of Mr Charles Knapp will regret to hear that he passed away this morning at his residence Spring Grove, at the age of 84 years. , In early life the late" Mr Knapp joined the police force and during a long term of service his duties were carried out with much tact and courage. He declined promotion and since retiring he has lived.quietly on his farm. For many years he carried out the duties of Clerk of the Court at Brightwater and later on often took his place on"the Bench as a .Justice of the Peace. Cricketing records show him to have been one of the original promoters of the Wakefield Club, and as a provincial representative player. With a great love of sport he could claim sixty years continuous attendance at the annual race meetings and to the last he was rarely absent from local sports gatherings. Mr Knapp was one of the pioneer members of the Mansion of Peace Lodge of Oddfellows of which he was a trustee. He married a daughter of the late Edwin Fowler, who predeceased him some three years ago. He (leaves a grown-up family of five sons and three daughters who will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends.
