FURTHER BUSINESS
Following further business was transacted at the monthly meeting of the W aim Oil County Council yesterday afternoon :
HEALTH INSPECTOR'S RETORT .lhe health inspector reported that during the month no additional eases ot infantile paralysis had been reported, and the epidemic appeared to have run its course. h ,l; ni Public Works .Department, re motor lorry regulations and discs.—Resolved to approve of the fount of disc submitted.
From the Highways District Council. intimating that the .Main Highways Hoard could not find the balance required to make up the £12.000 (or £13,600 latest estimate) for the -Motu<ka bridge. .By inference the Hoard declined to declare the bridge a Government road, and made a suggestion for reducing the cost, by decreasing the width of the structure at certain points. After some discussion Cr. Wilkinson moved that a further request he made to have the road declared a Govern-ment-one. At present, the bridge was carrying an immense amount of traffic from the Collingwood and Takaka districts, whereas a few years ago it was simply serving the Motueka district. He strongly urged that a decent looking structure be erected.
Seconded by Cr. Macmalion and carried. It was further resolved to ask .Messrs Hudson and Atimore, M.’s ]’., to back up the resolution. From .Public Works Department, notifying that the Council would require to pass a further resolution before exemption of Alotneka river road at Woodstock from the provisions of the Public Works Act could be granted.— Resolved that necessary resolution be
passed. From Public Works Department, intimating that the cost of the commission set up to upon the maintenance of a portion of t'he Rocks Road was £l7 2s, of which the Council’s share was £5/12/10. —Resolved to pass ! the required amount for payment. , I From Nelson Hospital Board, notifying that the amount of the Council’s levy from the current financial veur was £3686. Cr. Wilkinson : When is it, going to ■ stop ? I Cr. .Macmahon thought a protest t should he made as to the unequal vaiu- ! ittion of the hospital district. Nelson | city had not heen valued for a number iof years, and the valuation was ird : as high as if should he. The Wniincn ! County was paving more than it should , on account of having a litter valuation. I Cr. Wilkinson pointed out liow serious ! a matter these 'high rates were to- the ' man on the land. Some enquiry should ■. he made in order to relieve the position, as the farmers could not possibly I stand further taxes.
Cr. Berryman said he had it on good authority that a rc-vaJuatiou of the whole district would be made next year. The Council should combine with other counties in urging that the levy should be made on a population basis. He moved a resolution that the Act should be amended in the direction indicated. The motion was carried. From Kiwilea County Council, forwarding Commissioner's report re Palmerston North Hospital.—Deferred for consideration. From VV. Wells, ranger, asking Council to undertake collection of driving fees. —Agred to. From C. Monro, Palmerston North, re protective works.—To be thanked and referred to Engineer. From Archie C. Higgins and others, Wairoa- Gorge, asking for repairs to road between W. Irvine's and Pig Valley.—To be considered with the estimates. From S. L. Pyles, Woodstock, applying for permission to erect a private telephone wire.—Granted. From Joses Wilkinson, Tapnwera, asking for repairs to road between Hainy R iver and Topliouso.—Work in hand and tenders to be called for bridge. From A. C. Hopgood, Tapnwera, re payment for use of horses used in removing obstruction from road.—Writer to be asked to obtain roadman's signature to time-sheet. From S. Hannon, Tadinor, re expending grant of J 3200 for Kereru road.— Work to be laid out by Engineer as soon as possible and Department’s approval obtained. From J. Wa-tkin Hall, Ruby Bay, re gorse, etc., on roads.—Referred' to Noxious Weeds Inspector for action. From Win. Martin, Wakefield, re proposed groin in Pigeon Valley stream Left to Engineer. From I. H. Faulkner, Wakefield, re ditch -—ln band. From J. Borlace, Spring Grove, re bad state of road near his place.—ln hand.
