THE 'BUDGET. (Puess Association. —Copyright.) MELBOURNE, Sept. 23. The Federal Budget provides for an increase of old age'-and' invalid pensions from 10s to 12s 6d a week, involving an additional annual expenditure of £87,000. Last year pensions cost £2,859.766, and maternity allowances absorbed £659,715. new works £4,394,1-87' is allotted, including £150.000 for the Federated capital, upon which £856,000 lias already been spent. • ■*•»■■' The House received the taxation proposals cheerfully. THE WAR PROFITS TAX. MELBOURNE, Sept. 28. Mr Higgs. in explaining the war profits tax, said the standards would be 5 and 6 ]-or cent for 1915-16, and 7 and 8 per cent for 1-916-17. The lower rate lii each instance referred to private rbms, as distinguished from the pre-war standard.
