TERRIFIC BOMBARDMENT

FOR 72 HOURS. (Australian and N.Z Cable Association.) PARIS, Sept. 26. What i s going to happen on the Somme front cannot be foretold or exactly foreseen. For 72 hours the 'bombardment continued with stupendous intensity, smashing up the German lines, French and British guns of all calibres belching forth thousands of tons of projectiles.: The earth tremors resembledi earthquakes. The previous artillery preparations in Picardy and at Verdun were child's play compared with that on the Somme. Aviators assisted by dropping 'hundreds of Ibombs at points of strategic importance. A great number of ammunition depots were 'blown up and stations burnt. A GERMAN COMMUNIQUE. QjONiDGN, Sept,. 25. A German communique says: ' 'Enemy advance at Rancourt and ißouchavesnes failed. We repulsed strong French attacks north-west of Souville. We brought down nine aeroplanes yesterday."
