GERMANY AND PEACE

RUMOURED OVERTURES. OPINION IN LONDON AND AMERICA. (A-ustraiian and N.Z. Cable Association.^ NEW YORK, Sept. 22. The United Press has received the following London despatch: Germany will make another attempt for .peace about the middle of October according to the epiectations of British mflrtary and civilian authorities. Apparently -well authenticated rumours have "reached London that Germany has suffered immense losses in the recent AlEed offensive and is endeavouring to suggest an a-rmastf.ce through Spain or the United States. It is understood that King Alfonso is not responsive and that Germany now hopes to tempt President Wilson on the ground that if successful it will favourably affect his reelection. . .Amerieams conversant with inside .British sentiment are certain that such a move through Washington cans only fad; also that it will be bitterly resented by the AHies and permanently eliminate Washington as a "possible mediator. Everv indication points that not only are the Allies mndfied for the purpose of contmuing the -war until a decisive peace is obtainable, but also the Arjp.v and Saw's political leaders are united ,in their determination to assure responsibility, if necessary, for the war's continuation after Germany is willing to quit. British soldiers' only present ■worry 5s the over-optimism' of civilians because of recent and coming successes. The soldiers realise that .the Germans are Sob yet beaten and that a long and ardous task confronts thfem.
