GREAT SPEECH BY M. BRIAND
SOCIALIST DEPUTY REBUKED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) PARIS, Sept. 20. M. Briand, in. the 'Ghamlber of Deputies, made an eloquent speech as the outcome of remarks by M. Brizon, a Socialist, -who roused the Chamber's anger by asking whether France had not already suffered enough, and* could she not now negotiate for peace. M. Briand said : "Look at your coun-
try, M. Brizon. It has been violently attacked for two years, and. it has had its honour to champion. Its right band stayed the invader, yet when its blood flows you say. Negotiate peace! What a challenge! What an outrage to the memory of our dead. Ten of your provinces are invaded, old men, women, and children are carried off, and they await deliverance. Yet you ask for a peace which would be humiliating and dishonouring." . The Chamber gave M. Briand an ovation, and ibv 421 votes to 26 ordered his speech to be placarded throughout France.
