RICHMOND.

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Richmond Borough Council was-' held' in the Council Cham'bers on Tuesday, 12th Sept., at 7 p.m. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr Jas. Hunt), Cts. Ingram, Cross, Batt, and Goodman. Before transacting any business it was "proposed by the Mayor and seconded by Cr Goodman, that a letter of sympathy in their loss of their late son be sent to Mr and Mrs Chas. Challies, also that a letter be sent .to Mr G. H. Hammond, Nelson,' with an enclosure "of the same nature to be forwarded to Mrs Stevens, brother and sister of the late Captain Ernest Hammond; killed i» action on July 31st in France; also that the Council tender their sympathy \to Cr Cross on the death of his mother. These votes were all carried unanimously, all .present standing a® a mark of respect. V A resolution expressing deep sympathy with Mrs Cooke, of Richmond, on hearing of her son "being -wounded, and hopes were expressed that the wounds were not serious; and that -she would receive favourable news from the front.

k An apology for absence was received from Councillor Thorn on account of bad health, also tendering his thanks" for the Council's expression of sympathy oh her son being wounded. An apology was also received from Cr Rose, for his absence. Accounts were passed for payment as follow f— General Account £3B 18s Id; Water Supply Ace, £54 10s 9d; Waterworks Loan Ace, £l9 2s 6d; total, £63 Is 4d The following correspondence was read': From the Health Department';' reporting five, cases of .diphtheria in the borough during the month of August, and stating that the Health" Inspector had inspetced- the septic tanks constructed, in the Bbrough recently; arid the urgent necessity of'having all sanitary fittings and drainage work properly traptied and Ventilated to prevent dangerous <rasses gaining -access 'to the inside of dwellings, and that he .".•would be pleased to'inspect such works arid report to the Council. —Letters received and the In*spector's offer received with thanks. ; From the District Railway-Engineer re clearing out pipes at the crossing to; the , _ goods shed, and that the hack-up of " water between the back portion of the Recreation Ground' and the Railway line be left in the hands of the Works ; ( Committee. ■•'<_•' ' From the Hospital and Charitablt Aid Board asking the Council to undertake ' the connecting of the water .supplvvto ~ the present 'Old Men's Home. This work has been completed. , ■ The Foreman reported having finished cleaning ditches in. Gladstone-road and. _ Upper Queen-street, and haying re-- ■ moved the fence from the pack part.,of the Recreation Ground. Nine-inch pipes ' have been laid across SaUshury road, and. . work has been progressing ■ during J>he . fine weather at the Reservoir. Mr Pepin reported that he liad interviewed his solicitor re th© legalisation of the deviation of Hill-street (south), an d in conjunction with Mr 'Bartlett and „ the Chairman of the they had. interviewed the Waiinea County Council in connection with the con-*> stiuiction of the road and the extending of the Borough Boundary. Cr Ingram asked the Council's opinion where the water meter should he placed . in iKe main.—Resolved that the Council rheetat the Reservoir on Saturday afternoon at 2.30 p.m. and decide. Resolved, that the crossings at Mr McGregor's and Cr Thorn's properties be removed. Resolved that a letter be. sent to Mr Glen, regretting that damage had. been l caus<?d by the late flood to his property, and; the flood being an act of Providence, it -was therefore impossible for the Council to prevent it. / ." •"• A deputation consisting of Messrs Challies and McGregor, representing the resi- ' dents of Upper Queen-street, urged the Council to take into consideration the necessity of one or two fire plugs being put in and a. fire bell placed in Upper Queen-street, the necessity for both of which was noted in the two recent outbreaks of fire in that locality. These matters were left in the hands of the Water Works Committee to report on. This being all the business the Council • rose at 9.30 p.m.
