FURTHER PROGRESS SOUTH OF IHE SOMME. COUNTER-ATTACKS REPULSED. (Reuter's Telegrams.) PARIS, Sept. 18. A communique states that north of the Somme our artillery actively bombarded enemy works. South of ithe Somme we gained important successes. The villages of Vermandovillers ancß Berny, hitherto partly occupied -by us, were conquered iby a brilliant assault. Some of the houses are still resisting. All the ground -between Vermandovillers and Deniecourt, and 'between JJeniecourt and Berny. defended by several systems of strongly fortified trenches, fell into our hands after a desperate struggle. The fighting continues around Denie<tourt. "We captured a number of trenches between Berny and Barleaux. All enemy counter-attacks were shattered by our fire with heavy loss.
