CITY COUNCIL.
MEETING OP THE DRAINAGE '' COMMITTEE. TheYNelson City Council Drainage Committee met on Friday evening for the purpose of considering matters in connection with tho coming visit of Mr ifestayer, the Consulting Engineer, V The following were present: — The Mayor (Mr J. Piper), J. Robert.son, T. Field, T. Pettit, T. Neale, W. M'tionchie, and A. A. Grace. The Mayor explained that be understood that tho drains had been lad too shallow in several places. Tho .jCity Engineer desired definite instructions from tho Council as to Mr Mijftayer's inspection of the work. The Engineer said he would like to confer .with Mr Mestayer on several matter*|. Ho said there were certain localities in which he found a difficulty ilk effectng a dranage. If the powers had been laid at a sufficiently deep .level to drain certain places, it would have cost about £2000 more. Altogether, there would be difficulty in regard to about forty houses. Cr." Grace moved that tho City Engineer>..prepare a list of the houses that cannot be diained by the existing seweitf by Tuesday evening. It ap-peared-to him that it was a question of wh&ther the sewers should be laid at a.siifficient depth to embrace all houses! regardless of the cost. He was of* opinion tbat Mr Mestayer had designed; tho scheme in order to spend the money to the best advantage. Cr. Neale seconded. Cr. Robertson was of opinion that the number of houses which could not be drained was so small that it was not worth considering. The motion was carried. Cr. Field moved that a meeting of tho Drainage Committee be held on Wednesday evening, and that Mr Mestayer be invited to meet the Committee He also moved that a subcommittee, consisting of Crs._ Grace, Neale; and the mover, be set up to consult Mr Mestayer in reference to terminating his agreement with tho Council. This was carried.
