A SIGNAL FOR THREE KINGS.
[United Pbess Association.] - AUCKLAND, Thursday. Referring to the necessity for a signal, of some kind at the Three Kings, Sphere the steamer ..Elingamite and other vgjj^eljphave gofie/down, Mf"X"A.fsiniar (Minister for Marine) eaid h* considered the only satisfactory thing to do" was; to erect-a-fog signal there. He- had been making aTong inquiry into the system of sutimqrihe'signalllrig.^whic-vfiaß^been bo' largely and so suc'oesfully adopted along the coa§t: of -> America. The system was a most-effective one, but could only be putjntp_pperation when vessels were equ_ppi(r~with tbe necessary telephonic apparatus to. receive the signals. When this system was in. use it* vVas possible to receive a signal under water for a distance of 16 miles. If they could instal such apparatus on vessels trading to New Zealand it would be. possible to introduce the system here, and in "the case of such a locality as the Three Kings it would prove to be invaluable.
