RETAIL PRICES IN NELSON.
TO ikß EDITOB. Sir, — Without going into tho quarrel between, Grace B. Vincent and tho shopkeepers, or the question of whether her charges are true or not, may I, Sir, express the hope that this matter will not be allowed to drop without something of a practical nature being suggested? Your correspondent may De right or wrong, I do not presume to say, but certainly she puts forth no remedy for her alleged abuses. Nelson has had thousands of pounds spent on her harbour, on her roads, and on her railway, all with the object of sending her produce to other cities and other lands ; but so far no organised or public at/tempt ha9 been made to secure the prompt and cheap distribution of locally produced foodstuffs among her own citizens. Is it too much to hope that 4 his should now be dona? The working man's wife wants to buy fruit, fish, poultry, or vegetables. She makes a weary trip to town, only to find the shops empty of what she wante, or the prices, as she thinks, too hieh, ana returns home tired, disappointed and disgusted. At the same time there ade dozens of small growers who, unable at times to dispose of their goods to the shops at a profit, or sometimes i even at an, have given up trying, and let their stuff rot on the ground, or give up raising it. May we hope thai something will be done to bring the small buyer and the settler together for the good of both?
