WAIMEA HIGHWAY BOARD.
Tbiß B.ard held its monthly meeting at Wakefield on Wednesday, November 30. Tbe minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. It waa resolved tbat tenders ba invited for the gravelling of road in 88 Valley, to be opened and accepted by M- S3rs G. Fairhall and J Price on Thursday, December 15. No tenders hiving been recfi^. d for building a brick drain in Redwood's Valley, it was resolved to advertise again before the next meeting. ReaolTed, Tbat Mr Hodgson be allowed timber for three box culverts in Gibbs' Valley in lieu of assistance in labor promised. A letter was read from Mr Nichols ai paying for further assistance iv erecting tbefott bride over the Wai iti at the foot of Quail Valley, it requiring a longer bridge than was anticipated. The Inspector was directed to examine and report. Messrs T. Tunnicliff and others complained of tbe bad state cf the road in Rickett's Valley, calling attention to the small amount that bad been expended there during the past eight years. Resolved, That the road be made good from tbe German line to tbe Cemetery gate, but beyond that the inhabitants must contribute one-half the cost of further repairs. A letter was receive! from Mr W. Fowl-t, giviog notice tbat if the Board did not reconsider the matter of his claim for £2 7s for a new axle, and pay the amount, he would take legal proceedings. Resolved, That Mr Fowler be informed that lhe Board intend to abide by their former resolution, and decline to pay. Tbe Overseer was directed to repair a private road of Mr T. Freeman's which had been need to cart gravel on. Mr Isaac Baigent applied for assistance towards oppnirg a right of road to his land at Upper Wakefield, stating tbat the only approach at present was through private property. The Inspector was ordered to examine aud report. Mr James Grove complained that timber was being cut on wbat he considers his bush under the pretext that it is a public road, and wishing the Board to interfere to prevent any more felling of timber, and offering to rent the road at a nominal rent on consideration that it ia not fenced in, which he beiieves it to be. The Inspector was directed to make further enquiries, and in the meantime to warn the parties not to remove the timber from off the road. A letter was received from Mr C. Ford calling attention tc the gorse growing on the road and in the ditch by hi 3 property in Red wood's Valley, both on the main and by road. Resolved, That the day men clear the gorse out of tbe ditch, and eat it down on the main road, but on the by road it must be cleared by those wbo b_ve allowed it to spread. Resolved, That immediate steps be taken to abate the gorse nuisance. Tbe Secretary was instructed to sue for all rates remaining unpaid. A letter was received from the Colonial Treasurer requesting a return of the rates collected wbhin the present ro.d district, and the annual rateable property to March 31st, 1880. The Secretary reported that he had famished the return a=ked for. Warrants were signed for £120 _9_ 4i. Complaints havicg been made about cattle trespassing on the ronds, the day men were ordered to kuock eff work and take such cattle to the nearest pound.
