At a parade of the City Rifles last night Captain Bunny served out a secotd inßtal mem of money earned by his men on the r;cent expedition to Parihaka. They received £1 each when there, and last night were piid £3 mote. The Government must surely be very hard up when it is driven to fulfilling its engagements in this unsatisfactory way. Ie is not fair to place the officers commanding Companies in the position cf a trustee administering a bankrupt estate and doling out so much in the pound ft lons intervals. There was a very good attendance at the Theatre last m'ght wuen Gilbert and Sullivan's amii3ing opera " The Sorcerer " was capitally put on the stage. Unf rtunately the indisposition of the lady who was to have taken the p;irt of L*dy Saugazore prevented the opera beiDg performed iv its entirety, and the audience had to be eatiified with the first ect only, a disappointment wi h which they put up very good humoredly. Miss Leaf aa " Aiine " showed to great advantage and acted and sang charmingly, Miss Johns making up well a3 Mia» Partlett, and Miss Wyatt personating Constance very creditably. The other leading parts were quite well enough performed to make those present desire to see niora of them, and the second act would no doubt have been greatly enjoyed by all. To night the favorite opera " Maritan* " will be produced with an excellent cast, Miss Leaf of course representing Maritana, and Signor Morley Don Caeaar. To-morrow evening the Company will make their last appearance in Ntlßon. A MBKTiKG of the Tradesmen's Athletic Club will be held at the ExchaDge Hotel this evening at eight o'clock. A rußLic meetiDg in connection with the Spring Grove Sparrow Clab will be held this evening in the schoolroom at half past soven. The entertainment given in the Richmond Oddfellows' Hall last night for the benefit of the Fire Bell fund by Mr Brown and Company from Motueka passed off well, but unfortunately by not making it mora generally known there was not a large attendance, although an appreciative one. There was also a slight error in the announcement cf the interval, owing to which the last part of the entertainment was omitted, but it will be given to-night with an entire change of programme, ana all who desire to attend will be well repaid for their trouble.—Communicated. Mr Kavanagh requests ua to acknowledge the receipt of a very valuable and interesting work entitled, "The Countries of the World " by Robert Brown, M.A., contaming 121 beautifully executed engravings of the principal cities of the world, presented by his Worship the Mayor as a priza for good conduct for the boya of Si Mary's School. An onen meeting of the " Hope of Wakefleld " Lodge of Good Templars will be b«ld at. 7-15 o'clock this evening at the Lower w akefield Schoolroom. We (Morning herald) understand that by using hematite paint for the railway carriages the department now dispense with rnrniah and thereby save marly £4coo a year.
