CARY'S OPERA COMPANY.
The wet weather on Saturday night was not such as to render pooplo to leave their homes, however great might bo the attraction to do so, and for this reason there was but a limited ettendance at the Theatrs. To-nigbt the Company will perform, for tho only time ia Nelson the charming opera " Lss Cloches de Cornville " which was bo favorably received when produced by the Pollard Company, a couple of mrnths ago. Of their rendering of it the N. Z. Times speaks in high termi. It saya :— " The performanceof this opera by Gary's Opera Company was a marked success. Serpolettc (Miss Leaf) sang and acted her part to the life, her natural vivacity and jiiquante naivete adding greatly to her successful dthut in this part, more especially in the hiring scene, where slie received a shower of bouquets and a triple encore. A3 to Signor Morley as Greiniclieux, we have rarely heard, him sing better, the music suiting the register of his voice much better than in the part allotted to him in the " Pirates." Mr Porter, as the Marquis, was a great success — particularly in the "valse rondo" and in the duets with Germaine. He possesses a good baritone voice of considerable culture, which he uses with good effect, and he will, we predict, be a great acquisition to the troupe. Gaspard. the Miser (Mr Wentworth) performed histsome what difficult part very creditably. Gobo (Mr Barry O'Neill) was very comic in his funnimenta. with a Btrong Celtic accent somewhat foreign to an opera comi-
i qua: L'Assesseur (Mr Wilkinson) and Le Tabellion (Mr Liseant) ;rere also very comic: 1. The opera -sas superbly mounted, much better than we are accustomed to see in Wellington. The choruses wf>re grand, especially in the " Bells", the " Rising Scene," and the "Silent Heroes." Mr Gary rieFcrves every credit for his enterprise, and he now fi "lives as the first "»- pr es>,in io " of New Zealand. Mr Wolf deserves a word of praise for the way he has worked up the choruses, the greater part of which, we apprehend, were raw material.'' Tc-thorrow evening Gilbert and Sullivan's exceedingly clever and musical Opera •' The Sorcerer " will be produced.
