Melbourne, Wednesday. The debate- on Mr Ramsay's motion condemning the constitution of the Education Commission waß com menced ih the Legislative Assembly last evening. In tha course of ths discussion Sir Bryan O'Loghlan atated that he would consent to add more members to the Commission and appoint Mr Higinbotham chairman in place of Mr Ormond. Mr Rsmaay then smended his motion, aad in speaking to the same said he objected to the question of public policy such as the alleged grievances^of the Catholics being referred to tt Commission. Mr Francis spoka in support of Mr Ramsay's objection. Sir B. O'Loghlan declared tbat he would still consider the amended motion as a want of confidence, and insisted on an enquiry into the Catholic grievance. Further discussion followed and the debate was adjourned till to-day. Arrived, this afternoon, Union Coajpaay'a a.s. Te Anau, from the Bluff. The Duke has been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. Thorp, late I teller of tbe Bank of Victoria, wm brought up on remand, charged with the embfzzlement of £2500. It was stated in the evidence that the prisoner justified the robbery and declared that Mr Shaun, the manager, took the caßh and substituted a cheque for it. Goldsbrough'a wool Bales opened on the 12:h inst, and closed to-day. During the series 16,000 bales were offered and 10,500 sold, Large purchases were made for America and the Continent. Prices for greasy ruled from sevenpence to fifteen pence halfpenny. The debate on Mr Ramsay's amended motion regarding the Education Commission was resumed io the Assembly this afternoon and is still proceeding.' The Government expect a majority on the division on the motion. Thursday. The debate on Mr Ramsay's motion was continued to a late hour in the Legislative Assembly last night and wea finally adjourned until to-day. i Thorpe has been committed for trial on a cbarge of embezzling £2,500 from the Bank of Victoria. No further information has been received regarding the missing steamer Balclutha. It is now known tbere were 22 souls on board when she left. Melbourne for Sydney. A telegram to hand from Freemantle, Western Australia, reports that a Fenian scare has been occasioned there by tho appearance of armed boats off the coast. Tbey made off when seen and the police ara now searching for the intruders. Sydney, Wednesday. Reuter's office is authorised by the French Consul to state that the report now current of tbe intention of tbe French Government to establish a protectorate over the Island of Raratonga is groundless.
