LOKDON, Oct. 11. The frozen beef hrought by the steamship Orient from Melbourne was sold at Smithfield market to-day, and realised an average of five pence half-penny per pound. The meat was in excellent condition. Conso's 99. The market rate of discount haß advanced to 4£ per cent. There has been no change in the Bank rate. New Zealand tecaritieg remain at the last quotations. Adelaide wheat ex store 58s ; New Zealand ditto 565. A delaide flour rx store 425. Australian tallow ; best beef 41s 6d ; best mutton 455. The xaie for Czarewitch Stakes was ran to-day at Newmarket, the result being as followß : — Mr J. R. Reeves' Foxball ; Lord Bradford's Chippendale, 2; Duke of Hamilton's Fiddler, 3 e October 12. A bßcquet took place at Newcastle on Tyne last night, under Conservative auspices. The Maiquis of Salisbury, Sir Stafford Norfhcote, and otber leaders of the party were preseot and spoke on the occasion. The Marquis of Salisbury in his speech referred to the state of affairs in South Africa, and stated: that he was confident the Government would have to "eat dirt" iv Transvaal. Sir Stafford Northcote spoke of England's commercial relations with otber Powers, and repudiated tbe idea that the Conservatives favoured the adoption of a policy of protection. The presence of a French man-of -war at Alexandria at the present juncture having caused some comment in political circles, it ba3 been explained by the French authorities that the vessel is merely making her usual periodical visit, and that her presence in Egyptian waters has no connection with recent events in tbat country. £260,000 were to-day withdrawn from the Bank of England for Egypt.
