Wellington, Thursday. At a meeting of the Harbour Board this afternoon, a Committee waa appointed to confer with the Committee appointed by the City Council on the subject of a dry dock for Wellington. It was also decided that the Committee wait on the Government without delay regarding the question of endowment. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency report, under date of London, 16th August, as follows :—" The wool market is unchanged ; up to date 269,000 bales have arrived. The wheat market is irregular • the French crops are deficient and stocks are light, and there exists a speculative demand for Colonial wheat. Adelade wheat is worth
50s and New Zealand 51s per 4961b5. The tallow market is quiet, and stocks are heavy; best mutton is worth £36 and best beef £34 per ton. The leather market is quiet, and the trade duunnd is good; best sides are worth 11 i<! peril). Gisjioune, Thursday. Air Berries and some directors and shareholders of the Southern Cross Oil Company have gone lc. verify the reports re richness of the finds of oil. Shares here are up 200 per cent, and hard to qcl. at that. Oxmaku, Friday Mrs Aiigutiis died this evening from the injuries inflicted by her husband". The iatter's conduct proves to have been most foul, and worse than stated in the previous telegram. CHKiSTcncEcn, Thursday. There was another row in the "Liberty" office yesterday. Three men from Rangiora named Hossack, Blackett, and Sanson, went there to day, and complained or a paragraph in the paper. The editor was not to be Seen this time, but the intruders were not to be denied satisfaction, which they obtained by smashing up a quantity of iype ready for publication to morrow; and doipg some ojther damage. In the row one of the compositors was struck over the head with a galley, but not bodily hurt. The police appeared on the scene, and two of the offenders were arrested. Hossack seems to have been the principal, the others merely looked on. There were six or seven men in the office at the timd Bail Avas allowed. The case will be heard to-morrow as one of wilful damage. Friday. At a meeting of the Benevolent Association yesterday tbe receipt of subsidy from tbe Government amounting to £853 was announced. It was agreed to dispense with the soup kitchen in future. The operations of the Association are to be clearly defined at the adjourned meeting next. week. A. T. Dunning of Dunedin is said lo be negotiating for the purchase of the Theatre Royal and the adjoining hotel. A trotting match of 3 miles yesterday between Mr Porter's Black Boy and Mr McCarthy's chestnut mare, the former giving 100 yards start, was w.on by the latter. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, Henry A. Blackett, son of the Mayor of Rangiora, John Hossack, and John Sanson were charged with wilful damage to type at the " Liberty " office where they went yesterday to obtain satisfaction for a certain paragraph published in "Liberty." Oo the application of Mr Stringer a remand was granted till Wednesday next. Lyttelton, Friday. A meeting was held here last erening for the purpose of forming r Society "to promote- the nationalization of land in New Zealand in accordance with the principles contained in the pamphlet ' Land Ho.' " An explanation having been given of the scheme proposed, a resolution was passed in favor of forming a Society entitled " Tbe Land Ho Association, Number One." The movement ii meeting with considerable support here and it is intended to take steps to form branches throughout the colony. Tbe basis of the proposal ia the re-purchase by the State of all freehold properties, and the substitution of a system of leases with a provision enabling the State to resume possession of blocks of land above 2000 acres on payment of fair compensation. Donedim, Friday. The half yearly report of the Standard Insurance Company shows that, after providing for 1033e5, there remains a balance of £51?0, which the Dioectors propose to carry forward. They hope to ba able to resume payiog dividends next half year. The New Zealand Drug Company declare an interim dividend at the rate of 7 per cent. Mr Prince, with his string of horseß, left to-day for Melbourne. The wife of Mr Robert Chapman ex-Regis-trar of the Supreme Court by the the death of her uncle, e.i-Governor Sutherland, has received a fortune of £7500. Auckland, Friday. The search party have returned from their invesiigation of the wrecked vessel between Knipara and Manukau. There is no doubt that the vessel is the schooner Rons and that all hands have perished. Tho board with the vessel's name on has been brought to town ami identified. The natives have burnt the vessel down to the copper in order to hide signs of pilfering and to* secure tbe copper. As ahe now lies in the Band she ia not worth £10.
