Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, AUGUST 9, 1881.
The goldfields in the various parts of the colony appear to be holding out prospects of a most favGrnble character. The weekly report from Reefton, which appears in our telegraphic column, tells of remarkably good crushings there, the Welcome Company haviGg obtained considerably over three ounces per ton from 430 tons of stoae, which has enabled the directors to declare a dividend amounting in the aggregate to £4500, while another dividend amounting in all to £1200 has been declaied by the Golden Trasure Company Another of the leading Companies, tbe " Just in Time," is also anticipating hGcdsome returns from the crushing of the stone now being got out. From the north, too. the accounts are most encouraging, eleven ounces to the ton being tbe exp°cled yield from one of the claims at Ohinemuri, while other portions of the field are promising almost fabulous returns. A report of these mines will be found on the third page of to-day's issue. In our advertising columns it will be seen that the time for tenders for driving a tun nel 400 feet for " Johnston's Company " of Bedstead Gully, Collingwood, is extended to tbe 29th inst This was decided on by the directors at their meeting yesterday in con- I sequence of intimation being received of the intention of miners on the West Coast to tender for the work. It certainly is a hopeful sign for the district when a Company is ready to enter into such an outlay as must be incurred in this wrrk-, and we trust that they will achieve that sucee?s which appears probable, as it ia well kcovn that an unusually rich (?epo?it of gold exists in the Company's property quite apart from other valuable minerals. In the c urse of recent preparations for future work it was discovered I hat a reef three feet thick showing payable gold exists in the old workings, quite independent of tbe rich quartz in lower levels. We also understand that the Company are forwarding samples of galena end zinc blenrl to various places with the view of ascertaining its trua value and tbe best markets, an i it is hoped that eventually the Compauy will be able to undertake the working of these mioerals in addition to the gold The Shelbourne-sfrest schoolroom was crowded to overflowing last night on the occasion of the entertainment in aid of the building fund. The various iteni3 on the programme were all of them well received, and many of them encored, Madame Summerhayes and Boma of her pupilg contributing not a little to the success of the entertain" ment. Tins has been the moat wintry day we have experienced this season, the Fringed Hill, Maungatapu, and other high land in the vicinity of the town being covered with snow to an unusually low level. Messrs A Pai.mkr & Co. announce their intention of commencing business as auctioneers, their place of business being that portion of the premises occupied by j tbe late firm of T. S. Wymond snd Co as a I wholesale store in Bridge-street. We shall be | glad to learn that the amount of business to be done in Nelson will provide the new as well as the old firms with plenty of remun- j erative work. A New York telegram, which should prove I specially interesting to Mr Lundon, M.H.R., ! and those who endorsed his sentiments at '' tbe Land League meeting held in Wellington last week, will bo found ia our cable news of to-day. A cleverly written sketch of Sir George Grey's career by a contributor to the N.Z Times will be found on the fourth page. We have received a copy of tbe " New Zealand _ Schoolmaster," a monthly educa- j tional journal and review published at ' Napier. The paper is well printed, and the ! articles appear to be carefully prepared, while the general news is of special interest to those interested in the cause of education, i In the prospectus the following are promised to be the leading features of The Schoolmaster :— " School systems will be discussed, model lessons given, Educational pnblications reviewed, and everything done to assist teachers in obtaining the best and fullest information relative to Educational matters." j r i he Avst'atasi'in has a very complimentary ! article on Major Atkinson's Financial State- j meDt. It remarks:-—" We only wish that we ! bad a chance of seeing such a budget aa this i proposed in Victoria." ' The Post aays that according to the Re presentation Bill the following will be the electoral districts of Nelson:—" Town of Nelson" (one member), "Nelson East" ('extending to Pelorus), " Waimea," "MoMieka" (which will absorb Collingwood) " Buller," " lleefton," and " Greymouth." The Christchurch Press, anxious to allay the uneasiness created in the minds of some of its correspondents with regard (o the late Irish Land League meeting in Wellington I says:— The short account or the matter ia as follows :— The Irish Land League ia well known to be sorely crippled for v/ant of funds, and it is sending out in all directions, wherever it thinks itself at all iikiy to find supporters, in order to procure supplies, rhere are B orne evidences of local sympathy in kew Zealand, and it has been thought that an attempt to obtain practical support hero might at all events pay its expenses, if ' it did not result in anything better. Our so-called "Liberals" on the other hand have been quite as much in want of a policy as tbe Irish Laud League of funds, and it seema to have occurred to them that they might in a way make common cause with the Irish movement, and perhap3 warp it roun.i to something which rp.i#ht do to talk about in New Zealand. In this we h^vo the whole genesis of the great Wellington meeting.
