Wellington, Wednesday. A meeting of the Star Bcatiug Club was held last night to consider the advisability of instituting an amateur scuiling championship for New Zealand. It was decided that the Club should take fae initiative steps towards the accomplishment of the object. A Committee was appcinted (o draw up proposals, which will be submitted to all rowiDg elsbs throughout the colony. CnRiBTOHDaoH, Wednesday The total rainfall for the week ending Monday was 3.71 inches. We are now having glorious weather.
New Plymouth, Wednesday. Tne p,B. Samson on being moved baa landed on the wreck of the Pater* on, knocking a hole In her hn!l. The engines shifted and the water is flowing in and out of her. The captain has abandoned her. She is insurad in the South British for £300. Auckland, Wednesday. The proprietor of the Ram's Colliery has offered the captain of the ship Dunkeld a good freight to take coal instead of ballast on the vojage to San Francisco. Judge Gilliea to-day refused an application for a new trial in the slauder case, Crawford v. Johnson, heard at the civil sessions, when a verdict was returned for the defendant. He seid that though it was proved that the defendant had made a false statement affecting the plaintiff's chastity he had done so in confidence id the girl's late employer, and the surrounding circumstances showed that tho statement wa3 not made maliciously.
