Wellington, Sunday. An illict still has beeii discovered at Taratahi, in the Wairarapa district. The offender is a man named Fitz Vanschulter, who has been convicted of a similar offence at Palmeraton North. Dunedik, Sunday. H. Prince writes to the Star that the purchase of Sir Modred, Somnus, and Idalium was bona file on his own behalf, and hot as agent for Australian principals or others. He adds, " each and all of them will be raced by me on their merits." The Colonial Bank Directors' Eeport for the half year ended June 30, shows a net profit, after providing for bad and doubtful debts, etc., of £16,410 3s lOd. After adding the balance of the previous half year and deducting the tax on note circulation, and the property tax. the balance available, £16,396 17s lid, is to be appropriated as follows : — Add to reserve fund £2,600, making £30,000 in all ; payment of dividend 8 per cent, £12,000; balance carried forward, £2,396 17s lid. Monday. A four roomed house at Eaikorai owned by Alfred Martin, was burned down yesterday. It was insured in the South British for £100. John Spalding died at West Taieri from the effects of exposure, having lost bis way on the 18th met. He had been drinking, and when found two days later was insensible. At the Police Court James Pollock Holmes, charged with embezzling £18 of Government money received by him as bailiff at lavercargilj, was remanded to Invercargill, Gisbobne, Monday. A fatal accident occurred last sight to Charles Caliey. Tbe deceased, who was a carter, wag driving out of town when tbe boriee bolted and the driver fell off the shaft and was run over. Death is supposed to have been instantaneous. Deceased was a sober industrious man and leaves a wife and a large family. Cahteetok, Monday. Henry Goodwin, a rabbiter, accidentally shot himself on Saturday afternoon and died a few hours afterwards. His dogs had attacked some tame pigs and Goodwin struck at them with the stock of his gun and this hitting the ground both barrels were dis charged, lodging the contents below hia chest. The gun was at full cock. New Plymouth, Monday. The steamer Samson in endeavoring to crcsa tbe Waitara bar on Saturday evening grounded on the south spit, the river, owing to the southerly wind, being very shallow. The steamer iB expected to get off to-night. Chbistchorch, Monday. In view of the general election, Mr J. H. L. Stoke Grange is mentioned as a -probable candidate for one of the North Canterbury constituencies. Tbe weather is still unsettled, but looks like clearing. Il has been the heaviest rainfall known for 13 years. A considerable depth of water is standing on the young crops in aome districts, and it is feared that much damage will bo done.
