ATTEMPT TO ASSASSINATE THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.
THE PRESIDENT SERIOUSLY WOUNDED. Washington, July I. A daring attempt was made to-day at the railway station upon the life of the President by Charles Gintean, an attorney of Chicago, an unsuccessful office hunter. As President GarSeld was on the point of leaving by train for the north Gintean fired at him with a revolver, and the shots took effect and wounded the President in the arm and hip. He was at once conveyed to tb.6 White House for medical attendance. The surgeon's report is that the wounds are not necessarily fatal, but that bi3 condition is critical, in-
terral hemorrhage having set in. Gintean was arrested at the station before he could escape. Grurt excitement has been caused in the city and throughout the States by tho occurrence, acd much anxiety is manifested at the President's state. Deep and universal anxiety is felt through* out the States at the state of the President's health, and telegrams have bten received from all the Eurcpcaa Courts expressiug sympathy with him. It now transpires that the would-be assassin, Giutean, wis at en* time a Consular officer, but Yfas dismissed from his position. Paris, July 2. The hostilities which recently occurred betwfifn the JVench troops and Arabs at Sfax, in Tunlsj have caused a panic arnongst the European residents, who ai-e taking refuge on board the vessels in harbor. A further" outbreak of the tribes is feared, as a holy war is being preached through the district. Vienna, July 2. Serious riots have lately occurred at Prague in Austria. The disturbances being caused by a strong feeling whifc'h hits sJiotvii itself of late on the part of Austria residents against the German section of the community. Riots are still occurring ard are causing much trouble to the authorities.
