Auckland, "Wednesday, In reply to a request from the Grammar School Board that the Government should purchase the College building aa a Girls' High School, a reply was received that the Government had no funds available for the purpose. Mr Miller, of Victoria, was a through passenger by the mail Bteamer with the famous Kentucky trotting stallion. Wellington, Wednesday. Tbe Government have received information from the Agent-General to the effect that he is having fresh circulars distributed amongst stock owners calling their attention to the provisions of the Cattle Act Amendment Act, 1873, aud especially to the necessity of their obtaining a clean certificate before shipping stock to the colony. At the Magistrate's Court Henry Walters was committed, for trial for breaking into the dwelling house of John Francia Robertson. At the adjourned meeting of the Licensing Court an application for a new license which stood over since last Court day was refused. New Plymouth, Wednesday. At the Harbor Board yesterday afternoon the Public Works Committee brought up a report in which they recommended that Mr Bees' services as Harbor Board Engineer be dispensed frith, and that he be paid six months salary in lieu of notice. Mr Bhind, wbo has recently come from Scotland, was appointed to take charge of the works and tbe Chairman was instructed to make application to the Government for one of its engineers to be consulted from time to time as the works were proceeded with. Oaua.ru, Wednesday. Tbe heaviest sea that has been experienced here for the last ten or eleven years rolled over tho bar yesterday. The breakwater is not supposed to be injured, but a number of laborers' tenements built close to the beach were washed away or destroyed. Two fishermen's boats are in the offing but are safe at sea, which is not breaking a great distance out. Chbistchuroh, Wednesiay. The adjourned meeting of the Bangiora Licensing Commissioners was held yesterday when H. D. Monk renewed his application for a license for the Club Hotel. It appeared in evidence that a large hotel proprietor -in Christchurch hold a bill of sale over the goods of Monk and that the latter had bsen obtaining goods on credit without tbe means
of paying for them, and, being covered by the bill of gale, they were debarred from recovering them. The Chairman of the Bench (Mr Whi»eford) characterised the affair as " awindliog the public," and said the long and short of it was that the goods bad been sold to satisfy the claim of someone else. If the Commissioners knowing- this were to allow its continuance it would be opening the door to fraud and collusion, seeing that the Christchurch publican bad actually seized aud waß selling goods for which Monk bad received credit. The Bench refused to grant Monk a renewal but allowed a temporary transfer of tht» license to another man. At a meeting last night, conveyed by Mr Towle, it was resolved to form an Opera class for the pupose of producing the latest novelties is Operas. Fifty members were enrolled. Bcnedin, Wednesday. A Ihree-roomed cotape io North-East Valley belonging to Mr Elery was burnt down this morning. It was injured in the Transatlantic for £125. A private Company is starting in Dunedin for the mauufactury of Portland cement. The Crortiwell mine has sent down a cake of .3170zt. from 2&0 tons for th» fortnight* crushing;. The body of an apparently newly bom mile child was found in a calico parcel off Ptincea Street this morning. A four-roomed house at Upper Kaikorai occupied by John McLeod was burned down this morninsr. The house was insured but the amount is not ascertainable. Napier, Wednesday. • Tbe School Committee refused to allow effect to be given to the permission granted by the Education Board to the Bible in Schools Committee to issue circulars through the schools in order to ascertain tbe wishes of the parents of children in respect to Bible reading. The School Committee expressed the opinion that the Education Board had acted beyond; its powera, and instructed tbe heads of schools not to receive the circulars or allow their distribution in school. Another smart shock of esrtbquake cccurred at 715 this morning. By tbe earthquake on Sunday at Woodville the losses in destruction of chimney? and crockery are estimated at £500. In Napier the shock was* light and no damage was done. News has been received of the death of the wife of Meinerziger,an old Hawke's Bay sheep farmer. She died fhortly after arrival in Eagland, where the whole family recently took up their resiience.
