In response to tbe efforts made by the Go vernment of Germany and Russia to induce all the countries of Europe to combine against Socialism, the Socialist leaders have en leavoroJ to arrange that a Congress, representing all bel ;nglng to tbe movement, Bhould be held, at which- a common plan of operations should be determined upon. It was intended that the congress should me«i at Lausanne, in Switzerland.' The announcement that the Emperor of Germany's prize of plate, value £1000, offered for the most valuable Australian product at the Melbourne Exhibition, had been awarded to Messrs. Castella and Rowan for Victorian wine, has been subject to very favorable comment. This public recognition is regarded as marking the importance of the industry and testifying to the high quality of >ho wino produced. A great future is predicted for the Australian wine trade. The condition of Ireland shows little sign of improvement. The Tivuf, in a leading article dealing witk the maintenance of the Land League agitation, says that there is danger of the real grievances of the Irish tenants being lost sight of in view of the seditious character now imparted to the struggle. The authorities are in possession of authentic information which shows that tbe land agitation has been utilised by the Fenian leaders for their ends, and that the ranks of the Lea?ue have been swelled by avowed Fenians from affiliated lodges established among the Irish in the United States.
