HOLIDAY AMUSEMENTS IN DUNEDIN.

The steamer excursions were largely patro" nised yesterday. There were 3000 people at the Hibernian Society 'b picnic. " Pinafore " drew a tremendous house in the evening, hundreds being unable to btitiiin admittance, and the circus had 5000 visitors. All the amusements passed off without any accident. CflßiSTCiiußcH, Monday. At the Heaihcote races Randwick won the Cop. A man named Gibson shot another named Keirson, at Templedon, on Christmas Eve. Tbe two were on bad terms, Keireon's sister baviug been living with Gibson as his wife until a fortnight ago, when Keirson took her away, and Gibson threatened to shoot him. Keirson's collar-bone was broken, and the bullet remains in the body. His condition is precarious. Gibson has been arrested. A boy named Creswell shot himself severely in the arm whilst out pig huuting on Chiiitmaß Day. Tuesday. The Bec£jnd deposit in the pedestrian matcb, Hulatonof Christchurch v. Ilutton of Auckland, was made yesterday. The betting in in favor of Ilutton. Replying to resolutions from the Ashburton County Council, Mr ittxwell, the General Manager of Rail ways, says that extended enquiries have led to the conclusion that the agricultural interests require some concession in the railway tariff, which will bo carefully considered at once.
