Chbistchtjrch, Wednesday. Drzens of cases of window smashing have recently occurred in Christchurch. Last night two young men, John Hobberfleld and William Smith, were caught in the act and this morning were ordered to pay £11 15s. At 9.30 on Monday evening a fire occurred in a small shed belonging to the Kaiapoi Woollen Factory. The Bhed was used to store waste from the looms and owing to the combustible nature of the material it was situated at the . farthest point from the mills which tho ground would allow. The fire was soon got under and no great damage was done. The election of Mayor to-day is causing considerable excitement. The candidates are Councillors Aaron, Ayers, and James Gapes. The general opinion is that the former will b« elected. New Plymouth, Wednesday. - The Hawea arrived at 5 p.m., and left for Nelson and Southern ports at 10 a.m. Pas-sengf-rs : Miss Howes, Mrs Beale, Mr and Mrs Wells, Meßsrs Marks, Sargent, Clarke, Hill, Proctor, and Reed. A public meeting has been called by the Mayor for to-morrow night to consider the unsatisfactory working of tho railway department in this district. Auckland, Wednesday. The Bishop of Waipu and a a number of church dignitaries left in the Southern Cross to-day to inaugurate the opening of the Mission Cburch at Norfolk Island. Ah Ji, a Chinaman, attempted to drown himself yesterday but was rescued. The cause was intemperance. Intelligence has reached Apia, Samoa, that a heavy battle bad taken place between two parties on Savau between two Tillages inland. More have been killed and wounded than in any previous fight. Each side took three heads and it is supposed to be a drawn light for the present. Bodies of men are marching from the north-east Bide to the south Bide where more fighting will take place. Charleston, Wednesday. Councillor Lamplough is re-elected Chairman of the Buller County Council. Gold prospecting in this district is on Jthe increase and several new finds have been made, including quartz specimens. Dunedin, Wednesday. The ship Dunedin is at the Heads from London. A private telegram states that the schooner Jane Anderson, owned by W. A. Gibhs, of Dunedin, has been wrecked at Patea. The Victoria Company hare a risk of £300 on the hull. Mr Ifiah, a candidate for the Mayoralty, has placed a placard which appeared yesterday in the hands of the police, and offerß a reward of £100 for the discovery of the persons issuing it. The contest increases in bitterness. Mastbrton, Wednesday. A fire broke out in the Masterton Institute, which is now a mass of flames. It was insured in the North British and Mercantile Companies. Wellington, Wednesday. At the Magistrate's Court Adam Leich and Wm. Ellison alias Thompson, on a charge of burglariously entering Murry, Roberts, and Co'b warehouse and stealing a quantity of rum were committed for trial.
