Dunedin, Monday. Frank Butler was drowned iu attempting to swim across the Kawarau Falls. At the trial of the Boojum on Saturday, Mr Mills announced that the Union Company wore building a number of new steamers. The Maniapori, 285 feet long, 36 feet beam, and 25 feefc depth of hold, will be of the same power as the Rotomahana with twin screws, and having a carrying capacity of 300 tons on a maximum draught of nine feet. Ifc is intended to include Hokitika, Greymouih, Westport, and Wanganui. A third steamer is intendpd to trade exclusively from Westnort to the ports on the East Coast so as to develop the coal resources of that port. She will carry 500 tors on a draiight of II fiet. Three other steamers are to be built of steel and somewhat resemble the Boojum. One is to tender the Waitaki at Whangarei and to trade between that porfc and Waipa, another is to tender the Company's steamers at Gisborne, and the third is to be employed in tendering the Waitaki at Tauranga, and to keep up communication between that place and Opotiki. Two smaller steamers and three launches are to be in the coloDy by thia time next year. At the inquest on Agnes Weir the jury returned a verdict of suicide while temporarily iDsane, aud added a rider censuring her husband for not taking more care of the arsenic in the house and for his abusive language towards her. Auckland, Monday. News- from Fiji per Southern Cross states that Governor Gordon is making a tour of the islands in H.M.S. Danae, and will arrive in New Zealand about the 18fcb instant. Mr J. Hunt, who was prohibited by Sir A. Gordon's proclamation .from being within fche Navigator Group for a period of two years, brought an action in the Supreme Court at Levueka against Sir Arthur Gordon for £2000.. The Court ruled that it had no jurisdiction as the Governor was privileged, and acts done by proclamation could not be questioned. Hunt, who is a passenger to Auckland, threatens to bring an action here. £660 have been subscribed for the Dargaville races. On thp 15th ultimo the Wesleyan missionaries in Fiji presented an address to Sir A. Gordon, expressing their high admiration of tiis unwearied efforts for the advancement of the native race. Timaru, Monday. W. Hosborne and John Drayton have been remanded till Friday next for breaking into the premises lately ocenpied by F. A. Sims and Co., and stealing therefrom jewellery and other goods valued at £20, the property of the National Bank. Other charges are pending, the total value of the property removed was £130. David Hayes was sentenced to two months' imprisonment for stealing timber from the saw mills near Waimate. Forged documents bearing the seal of the Magistrates' Court were served on Bomo of the Orangemen attending the late procession, charging them with carrying firearms. Official t-nvelopes were used, and the matter demauds a searching investigation.
