Ddnedin, Monday. Agnes Weir, wife of John Weir, of Willfarnsborougb, Mornington, took poison yesterday afternoon. Her husband, who has been earning very little for some time past, contemplated going up the country, and for this purpose bad purchased a pack horse and saddle. Mrs Weir was adverse to his leaving, and this, in conjunction with family matters, led her to commit the rash act. She was taken to the hospital, where aha died this afternoon. On dit that one of the Candidates for tbo City Mayoralty has issued a writ for £2000 against the Morning Herald for alleged libel. Five stacks of oats belonging to Alexander Youngson of Popotunia were burned down on bMday. Incendiarism is suspected. They were insured in the Norwich Union for £150. WkLlington, Monday. A young mail named Harry Woods was rather severely injured on Saturday afternoon by being thrown from a horse he was training for the local races to-morrow. A lad named Frank Fetberick had hia left hand blown off on Saturday night by the accidental explosion of a dynamite cartridge. Bluff, Monday. The Arawata arrived at 4 a.m. having left Melbourne oh the 3rd at 8.5 D p,m. She sailed at 2 p m. for Dunedin. Christchurch, Monday. Morrice Jones, a well known cattle dealer, has been missing since Friday. In the Calcutta sweeps drawn on Saturday night Foul Play, Betrayer, and Le Loup were about equal favourites for the Jockey Club Handicap. In consequence of the heavy rain very little training was done yesterday. Lure is at evon money for the Derby, and Foul Piny and Lure are equal favorites for the Cup at 3to 1. Lamonde and Hinemoa are most fancied for the Welcome Stakes. Mr Sbadbolt's thoroughbred stallion Eclat fell over a precipice near Akaroa and broke his back. A man named Bunker was drowned yesterday while endeavoring to ford the river Waiau. Large numbers of men who were put on to the railway works by the Government during the unemployed agitation continue to leave, having obtained more remunerative work elsewhere. The weather was very wefc yesterday but now promises well for the races. Only Messrs Cutts and Kobinßon'B teams appeared on the course this morning and did alow work. The other teams are trained on private grounds. Amulet is a hot favorite for the Welcome Stakes at 3to 1. The betting is very quiet.
