MELBOURNE RACES. Melbourne, Tuesday. The second day's races of the Victorian Racing Club's Spring Meeting was held today at Flemington. The weather was splendid, and there was an immense concourse of spectator., estimated at 100,000. Tbe course, it is believed,- haa never before been so crowded. The Marquis of Normanby, Sir William Jervois.and the Duke of Manchester were present. The following are the results of the chief events, the fields for which were large, and the racing good: — Maideh Platb, A sweepstakes of 10 soys each, h ft, with 200 added. Napper Tandy w^is; placed third by 1 the judge, but'it'was found to be an error. x Grand Flaneur's -: winning is hard- on'the bookmakers, as he. was largely backed in doubles. Grand Flaneur haß never yet been beaten, and his^ victory, is very, popular. . ,All the placed horses were strong favorites, showing that their running was v.ery?true. ; . Mr Proud foot, the Dunedin contractor, has made an offer to the authorities to eonstruot a tramway to Melbourne, and his proposal is under consideration. Stdnby, Tuesday. : The Wallsend, Co-operative, andMinmi miners have struck, and the others threaten to do so unless they receive the hack pay due to them in accordance with the recent arbitration. . .
