P ARLIAMENTARY.

Wellington, Tuesday. Mr Shephard resumed the debate last night on the motion tb go into Committee of

Supply and Mr Pyke's amendment. He strongly supported the latter and condemned the report of the Bailway Commissioners, regarding tbat, if a vote of consure on them would prevent the appoiutmenfc of any more Royal Commissioners, that alone was a strong reason for passing oue. Messrs Thompson aud Hutchison strongly condemned the report, the former advocating the claims < f the Catlins River line, aud the latter those of the Wellington-Foxton line. Captain Russell spoke in support of the Commission and inculcated the necessity of more self reliance aud less dependence on borrowing. At the same time he appealed to the Government to give a few more miles of rail war iv Hawke's Bay. Mr Hurst regretted the omission of the Orepukl line from the Public Works Statement. Mr Why te stoke generally in favor of the report aud against the reckless policy advocated by Mr Maeondrew. Mr Jone3 strongly coudemned the Central Otago line and urged the claims oi the Nasby-Livingatou line. Mr Pitt failed to see any object in Mr Pyke's motion, and generally, supported the report ltbough be contended that justice had not been done to Nelson iv regard to public woiks expenditure, compared to the res' of the colony A* one o'clock Mr Pyke's amendment was negatived ou a division by 30 to 15, and the House went into Committee of Supply. The following votes were passed on the Public Works Estimates :— Class 11, £14,870, Class 111 Kawakawa line, £47,000 ; Whangarei to Kamo, £49,000 ; Kaipara to Waikato, £131,000; Waikato to Thames, £99,000; Wellington to Napier, £37,000 ; Wellington to Woodville £122,000 ; Wellington to Foxton, £36 000; Foxton to New Plymouth, £117,000 ; Carlyle to Waitara, £199,000 ; Nelson to Grfy mouth, £135,000 ; Greymouth to Nelson, £70,500 ; Greymouth to Hokitika, £7000 ; Westport to Ngakawau, £7000 ; Picton to Hurunui, £10,000 ; Hurunui to Waitaki, £178,000 ; Canterbury Interior Main Lino, £16,800. Progress was reported, and the House rose at 3.50 am.
