Wellington, Monday A deputation ol Goldflelds' members waited on tbe Premier to day, to urge the necessity of greater Ministerial attention being paid to goldfield matters and the gold mining industry generally. The Premier, in reply, said it was now proposed to make a re-arrangement of portfolios at the end of the session, so that the Minister who might hold the portfolio t of Mines might be able to devote more tiue and attention to the subject than hitherto had been possible. Tuesday. The jury in the case against Wilson for indecent assault were locked up all night and returned to court this morning with a verdict of not guilty, the foreman stating that there was a do abt j of which they gave the prisoner the benefit. A man named Palmer attempted suicide this morning hy cutting an artery in the arm, but the wound was not dangerous. The supposed cause is incapability of obtaining work. E-Dmara, Tuesday. After most hazardous work the recovery party discovered the body of Denis Phelan yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock, but it was after 11 o'clock at night before the body was thoroughly released and brought to the surface. The' examination of the body conclusively proved that death must have been instantaneous while the victim was in the &3t of runr :ug for the shaft, aB a set of lathes
had struck him on the back, breakiug it and inflicting injury to the chest. The body was immediately dressed and coffined and removed to town. Tho body of John Phelan was found in cioso proximity at one o'clock this morning, but although every exertion was used it has not been got out, as the ground is very dangerous for the party at work. It is expected to be brought to the surface to-night. Cummins, one of the iujured meu is vow iv the hospital, but his life is despaired of as he is sinking rapidly. Tho inquest on Denis Phelan's body commences atl o'clock to-morrow and probably will be adjourned until after tbe funeral. The general opinion that is the Government Bhould appoiut an inspector of mines in tho district to report on tbis case. Dunedin, Tuesday. A London telegram dated July 3 stales that Hanlou is dangerously ill from gastric fever, and fears arc entertained of the result. Tho cause is attributed to his rowing in the recent regatta at Rhode Island against the directions of bis medical adviser. Auckland, Tuesday. Tho trial of Coomb es for embracery com menced th_9 tnorniug. The evidence is much the same as given iv the Supreme Court so far. A fatal accident occurred at Ararimu to two meu named Fahey, who were killed by the fall of a rata tree, which struck them between the head and shoulders, causing instant death. Christchurch, Tuesday. The Orange dinner last night was a great success, over 200 being present. At the Magistrates' Court thia morning, Ambrose Hume, aged 10 years of age, and George Frithe, 9£ years, were charged with stealing a horse. The prosecutor left his horse tied securely near his house, and next morning it was gone. The prisoners subsequently tried to sell the horse for 255. The case was dismissed, on the understanding that the parents severely whipped the boys in the presence of a constable.
