Dunedin, Monday. Charles Peterson and William Smith, fishermen, are reported to bave been drowned at Sandfly Beach during Saturday's gale. Invercargili,, Tuesday. It is rumored that in two casea in Southland in which the licenses were refused, the hotels will be opened as Working Men's Clubs, the proprietors acting as manager. This evasion, it is said, is easily practicable in the present state of the law regarding Clubs. In one case the license was lost owing to a notorious case of " lambing down." Ifc is reported that the Southland members intend to move the repeal of the Triennial Parliaments Act. A local author announces the production of an Australian drama called «• The Kellys." Chkistchurch, Tuesday. At a meeting of the Benevolent Association the Committee reported that 170 cases of destitution had been relieved, and they had already distributed 120 bags of coal averaging If cwt, 65 bags of potatoes of about 1-| cwt each, six pairs of blankets, 500 yards of flannel and 132 yards of calico. It was resolved to procure a further supply of blanket and flannel. Timaett, Tuesday. A general grocery store in the main road, belonging to James Martin Shepherd, was totally destroyed by fire this morning. The building was of wood and contained a heavy and valuable stock of merchandise. The insurances are £900 on the stock in the Union, £200 of wbich is re-insured iv the New Zealand, and £300 on the building in the London and Lancashire. Mr Shepherd estimates his loss at between £400 and £500 in excess of the insurance • Bluff, Tuesday. The Arawata arrived at noon having left Melbourne on the 23rd. She sails at 5 p.m. for Dunedin. Saloon passenger for Nelson Mr Sleman and two steerage.
