'.Wellington, Tuesday. The schooner Colleen Bawn, which left here for Havelock on the Ist May, is missing, and is supposed to be lost. The Customs Revenue at this port for May, amounted to £16,000. The Licensing Court sat to-day, when all the old licenses were renewed. Three applications for new licenses were refused. Blenheim, Tuesday. Mr Samuel Johnson, formerly proprietor of the Marlborough Express, has received notice from the plaintiff that he does not intend to proceed with the libel case of Calder v. Johnson. Dunedin, Tuesday. At the inquest on the body of Martha Lockhart, who d'ed under suspicious circumstances on Friday night, the evidence showed that the husband was in the habit of illtreating her, and had struck her the night before her death. A verdict of manslaughter was returned against the husband, Charles Lockhart, who was committed for trial. Mr James Fulton, M.H.R. for Taieri, ■addressed his constituents at Outram, and said he was in favor of a reduction of the expenditure. He could not see how the country could do without the property tax, which waßj doubtless, inquisitorial, but not

H.M. corvette Danae has arrived from Samoa, and will probably remain till the end of June, when she proceeds to Wellington to meet the Commodore, and receive a fresh crew from H M.S. Raleigh. During her stay at the Solomon Islands, the Danae visited most of the islands of the group, and discovered a fine unknown harbor. During the last four months the ship has been employed in the Samoan Islands in upholding the claims of the King. The constant quarrels among the rival parties have frequently called for interference, and only a few days before she left, an outrage by the people of Lufi Luf i on the royal party necessitated the destruction of the town. The seamen and tnarires, in the face of an army of 3000 men who were assembled in the neighborhood, landed and destroyed the whole settlement. Four houses with a bakehouse and stable in the Kyber Pass road were entirely destroyed by fire on Sunday morning. The damage is estimated at £450. Two men, Kingsley and Lonnand, who have been under the surveillance of the police, induced Major Westrupp to play chicken hazard at the Cosmopolitan Hotel on Saturday night, when they won £68. The Ringarooma arrived at 1.20 p.m., and sails at 5 p.m. for Dunedin. Christchurch, Tuesday. Yesterday Camballo and Mata were nominated by telegram for the Hawkesbury and Metropolitan Handicaps and the Melbourne Cup. Invercargill, Tuesday. The Southland County Council yesterday resolved to discontinue the employment of a solicitor, thereby adding cost 9to judgments for rates sued for. The County Clerk will appear in future. Madame Carandini has received advices that her son, a colonial youth, educated in Tasmania, and now in Afghanistan, has been appointed adjutant of the Bth Hussars. He originally enlisted as a private in a Lancer regiment, and on promotion, was transferred to the Hussars. About 400 summonses will shortly be issued against land tax defaulters in Southland.
