London, May 7. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 1 ? 950,000 quarters. Best Australian beef tallow 32a 6d, best mutton 345. . At the wool sales to-day, 8,600 bales were offered, making a total of 164,400 catalogued since the opening. To-day's auction was marked by a slightly improved tendency. There is a fair demand for most descriptions of hides. The Board of Trade returns of imports and exports for the last month show an increased improvement. The question of meat importation is seriously occupying public attention. The prospectus has been issued of a Colonial Fresh Meat Company, with a capital of £200,000. Half, that sum will be issued, and the Company will commence operations immediately. May 8. Sir William Vernon Harcourt, who was appointed Home Secretary in the new Minis- ] try, has been defeated in seeking re-election for Oxford. Constantinople, May 7. The assassin of Commeroff, one of the attaches to the Russian Embassy in this city in March last, has been sentenced to death.
