The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, MAY 6, 1880.
We learn that a serious assault bas been committed at the Nelson Gaol, and an inquiry into the circumstances was commenced this afternoon, but too late to enable us to lay any of the evidence before our readers to-day. We may state, however, that some prisoners who were sent here from Wanganui taking offence at something said or done by a prisoner named Carter, who was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment for passing valueless cheques on W. Milner, set upon this man and ill-treated him so brutally that certain of his ribs were broken, and other injuries inflicted. A full report of yesterday's Magistrates' Courts of Nelson and Brightwater will be found on the fourth page of to-day's issue. A special meeting of the Inland Communication Committee re the Nelson and Greyruouth Railway will be held at the City Council Chambers to-morrow afternoon at three o'clock. Tiie Railway Commissioners will arrive here from the West Coast to-morrow evening by a special coach, which has been despatched by Mr A. Greenfield to convey them from Hampden to Foxhill.
